Our School system's report card:

1-  "…American public high schools are... seriously failing a substantial minority of young people across the nation," says Mike Cohen, president of Achieve, Inc.

Furthermore....“Large majorities of college instructors are dissatisfied with the job public schools are doing in preparing students for college when it comes to writing quality (62 percent) and their ability to read and comprehend complex materials (70 percent).”

QUESTION:
Is the American school system, more particularly, Liberty High School too weak and not preparing students for college or even the real world?   How can we change this? Who is to blame?

  1. I believe it is not the school systems fault, its the students. The student are the ones who don’t study, the students are the ones who don’t pay attention. Us students are lazy and choose not to do a worksheet, and we choose to sit in class and listen to music, and play games or go on twitter instead of choosing to learn the subject given to us. Also there are the ghetto kids who want to give teachers a hard time, or just undisciplined, disrespectful kids who would rather piss the teacher off than do a problem on the board.

    1. Kids that are distractions are the reasons we don't get the education we deserve. I agree students really are the problem.

    2. A lot of this is very true, and I agree with you. Most of the things you said are very similar to what I was trying to explain and it all makes sense.

    3. I agree with you completely and I think that the problem within most academic classes is that a lot of students just don't feel like trying and in honor or AP classes all of the students are prepared to work hard because they signed up for the courses

    5. A huge part of the problem is absolutely disruptive students. The ones that talk nonstop during class or disrupt the class constantly are part of the reason that it seems like the school system is terrible. At the same time, however, there are cases of it being teachers' faults that students don't actually want to learn. Being honest, some teachers in some places are either extremely rude, or just don't get up to teach. These teachers don't value learning, causing some students to stop caring and let their education slip away.

    6. Yes, A teacher can only do so much to teach a student. Its the students responsibility to either pay attention and learn or do nothing and fail.

    7. Imagine a school system and the students that it would graduate if both teachers and students were credible, dedicated and anxious to learn..

    8. I agree as high school students we should pay more attention to the teachers and not our phone because at the end of the day social media will not help us pass. Also it's some teachers faults because of how they teach some teachers teach one method when others teach multiple I think if teachers teach in different ways they all there students can learn things might become better.

  2. Its not the schools its the minorities. I believe that if all students apply their selves they have the ability to pass all their classes with no problems at all. If the students stop fooling around like they and act their age they should not have any problems whats so ever.

  3. I believe the students are to blame. They either don’t put effort into their work or don’t get the help they need. Some may say they dislike the way their teacher teaches or say that their teacher can’t teach. They can’t expect to pass if they aren’t doing anything to study what they don’t understand.

    2. True some teachers sit behind their desk all class and just handout worksheets. If they want the students to excel in getting a education, they need to get up and touch the students. Motivate them to want to learn and move forward in there lives

    4. There are reasons for why teachers can appear inept at their profession. A teacher has to deal with a large number of students (the number of students may vary depending on the size of the school) who each have their own personality and way of learning. The students can either be difficult or easygoing, but either way it is a challenge to ensure every student is learning properly. In my opinion, teachers are underpaid for what they do.

  4. The Liberty HIgh Schools system isn’t weak at all. Some students just don’t try as hard as they should be to succeed. Students can be trying to do things like participate more in class and stay after for help but they don’t choose to. The schools teachers you what you need to learn you just have to want to learn.

  5. I feel like in some ways I am being prepared for college, and in some ways I am not. High School is about passing nowadays instead of learning. In many of my classes I am learning a lot, and in others I feel like I am not learning not one thing. I’m being forced to just pass the class instead of learning and passing. This is definitely a problem but I know there are a numerous amount of ways to help resolve this problem. There is not one specific person to blame, it is both teachers and students to blame. Teachers could do a better job of teaching us a certain topic to better our understanding, and students could do a better job by participating, being well-behaved, going to the teacher when you really need help, cut down on your social media/life and take a break so you can improve your learning and get an education so you will be prepared for college and the next levels.

    1. This is all facts. Its both the student's and the teachers fault. some teachers will sit there and hand you a packet without actually teaching the curriculum. They make you teach yourself. In some cases that's a good thing and, in a way can prepare you for college but its not helping if we have no clue about what we are doing.

  6. The education setting in the American Nation reaches 17th in the world according to http://www.ibtimes.com/us-17th-global-education-ranking-finland-south-korea-claim-top-spots-901538. Does this mean schools in America are failing to train students to become college students? Well, if the majority of colleges feel displeased with the results of high schools, then yes. Are high schools even preparing students for the real world? The point of view I have is that public high schools barely instruct students to do real-world necessities, such as paying taxes. What are ways the change can appear? In my opinion, it would be a good idea to view the way other nations educate their students and try to follow their direction. There could be many perpetrators for the global ranking of the school system, like the U.S. Government, American Pop Culture, the students themselves or a combination of them all. The U.S. Government can spend more on education and less on defense, and American Pop Culture can be a better motivator by putting educated role models on a pedestal rather than high school drop-outs. Students in schools should play a role by applying themselves in their work and take the time to obtain a good grade, if they need to be assisted, help should always be on the way.

    1. I concur that "The point of view I have is that public high schools barely instruct students to do real-world necessities, such as paying taxes. " especially since there used to be a course like this here at Liberty too. It was cut though, because they had to fire teachers and felt that Literature classes were more important than real world courses!!

      Delete
    2. To be fair, literature classes do have importance. They would teach students how to read and write properly, and teach them how to interpret letters and texts. Having those skills are essential to the work places many want to go to. A person without them has a slim chance of getting into those jobs. However, I feel literature courses teach subjects that are out of use in my opinion. For example, reading Shakespeare plays have no use for the fact that an infinite number of people cannot understand the writing.

    3. BUT WAIT>. I didn't catch this powerful suggestion the first time I read Foell's post ; SERIOUSLY.. YOU HAVE A GREAT THEORY/ PLAN HERE!! Imagine the powerful trend/ wave of change our country could undergo if we could get pop culture to change.. "The U.S. Government can spend more on education and less on defense, and American Pop Culture can be a better motivator by putting educated role models on a pedestal rather than high school drop-outs. "

In all honesty, our country's media "value system" is seriously out of whack! and yet, if it would begin to publicize "goodness" and work ethic, and kindness, and passion for learning in its television shows.. IMAGINE what would happen over the years! I mean, do you fear the morale in which your own children will grow up? You won't be able to turn on a tv show for them to watch, or to be able to go out in public in fear of how people flaunt their body even at a store or because of fights, or cursing, or..... Think of it this way, EVERYTHING YOU SEE IN THE HALLWAYS AT LIBERTY, IS ONLY GOING TO SEEP OUT INTO THE PUBLIC and INTENSIFY (especially since there is no one guiding them at this point)

      IS THERE A CURE??

  7. There really isn't a specific group of people to blame. Sometimes students don't do the best they can do in their classes and would rather not study. And other times teachers just aren't good at teaching and explaining the material.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Why does everyone say what "us students" are doing wrong, but aren't giving suggestions to how to make things better for the education...
At the rate that this country is going, education will literally be the only way that any of us can get in a successful career.
Teachers and students and not to mention the parents as well are the ones to blame, It doesn't take just one group of people to mess everything up.
From experience, I can say that it's as well the parents.
The generation at this time sucks, honestly.
Not all parents are on the kids butts to get good grades, but to get the " well just as long as you passed." Since when is it okay to fail classes and not care.

    1. The thing is if a student knows that he or she is failing a class or just doing poorly they are the ones that need to take action and get extra help, whether it's from a different teacher, an actual tutor or a classmate that understands the work. The students are just too lazy to study and seek help, if they don't want to learn or don't make an effort there isn't anything anybody can do.

      Delete
    2. It scares me too when many of my students' top concern is only if they "passed" or not. Whatever happened to the kid monitoring his or her A? I admire the work ethics or those who care and those who struggle, yet care. Yet, I do not know how to teach a kid to "care." Please advise.

  9. The way we can change the American school system is not by being harder on us, the problem is that schools are giving kids all the same work and we are all different. Some of us can’t comprehend mentally so then they throw you in a conceptual class and make you feel like you are stupid. So when we don’t understand the material now, what makes you think we would understand it if you just forced it on us more in a more complex way ? I think kids should learn at their own past because not everyone learns the same.

  10. I hate to say it, but, this is a "free, public" school system.. Not a private, tuition paid one. And many people out there think that this is basically, "you a get what you get" system. Seriously.. Teachers are fighting all odds, even students are too, mostly at home, and this system is free.. If people wanted to go to a specialized and high demands and superior teaching academy, then pay for one!

    2. Our school system is just that, a free one.. When you get "free" things in life, you don't ask for an upgrade or a different color one, or get to trade it in.. "You get what you get" and are happy with it.. Yet.. I can tell you, though, the teachers, would be seriously offended by this as they are crazy dedicated and sometimes obsessed with improving what they do in their classes everyday!!

  11. I can see were you are coming from i believe that we should focus more yes on schools then defense, but think of it like this in 50 years a man with a college degree will be almost close to extinct men in this country aren't doing whats needed to be done in this society and time and age. We need people to take school seriously, but how can you make someone take school serious if there main focus is making money illegally, or just staying at home and sleeping all day to many kids are focused on the future growing up to fast instead of just living there lives how its supposed to be lived. They don't realize that school is important that is why when they are homeless 30 years from now they are gonna wish they took school serious now honestly in my opinion women please if you read this don't let this get your head to quick now women yo are the future of america frankly women have more or better percentage of not dropping out of high school then men do women you are what is going to be America in 30 years you are going to be on top, but in order for that to happen don't drop out of school do what needs to be done i agree on everything you are saying on your comment but men are the main reason why america is going down hill and frankly if men keep running america like this there will either be a world war 3 or america is going to be no more.

  13. I think it's the students fault. Some students choose not to study, not to pay attention and then when a test comes they wonder why they fail. Some students are lazy and don,t pay attention because there on there phones for most of the class time. Then they go to ask the teacher why are they failing.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Some students at Liberty High School don't care as much as they should, but it's not entirely their fault. With the way the American society is today many students are giving up, thinking that either they'll get free hand outs (such as food stamps and housing, although I understand some who actually need it) or their are not guaranteed a job once they exit high school or college.
One thing I know is that our average low grades (ex. 60-80) are actually the some of the better grades over seas. The education systems in different countries are a lot better than here. They actually help their students more and push as hard. In different countries students are actually happy to go to school and learn. But, here, at Liberty for example, is hard. The students who actually try to get to class on time can't because of the idiots who like to stop and talk, told that we must take this class in order to graduate, or colleges will like to you have this on your transcript. In my personal experience I wanted to take a class over again because I didn't fully understand the material in the next advanced class. But, I wasn't allowed to because I had already passed that class. I guess I just have a different point of view when it comes to education, but everyone has their own opinions.

  16. The American education system is not doing nearly enough to prepare children and adolescents for a higher education and/or the real world. How easy is it to graduate public high school? You don’t even have to prove that you have truly retained any information, just that you have the ability the to spit the information you were given a short time ago. Quite simply, you must prove that you have a sufficient short term memory. The education system is not designed to actually teach you things, it is designed to make you conform and become a somewhat decent human being and member of society. I feel that it really isn’t any one persons fault, rather just the way our entire education system is and always has been, “sit down, shut up, and remember what I tell you”

    1. The education system has changed too much and not in a good direction. Now its harder to get into college because not everyone is either the genius they want or they can't afford it. It used to be you only had to get good grades to get into college, but now its so many different things.

      Delete
    2. They say that you only remember important things you need to remember and once they aren't needed anymore you forget the things you once needed. So once you graduate High school you basically think that you no longer need anything you learn so you forget it. The Education System programs things in to students heads that is just going to be lost anyways. I agree they don't prepare students for the real world.

      Delete
    3. The American education system puts extreme emphasis on standardized tests. The only thing anyone learns from these tests is how to pass a test. In my opinion, that is not learning. My definition of learning is to be intrigued with knowledge and try to experience different ways to obtain it without having to feel like it is an assignment.

      Delete
    4. Entirely agree.. Testing has caused us to realize that now teachers too believe that "... (students) are (presently) not valued by a system that focuses on preparing workers rather than thinkers, collecting data rather than teaching and treating teachers as less than professionals."

I personally think that there is no one to blame for this but the students of LHS. The teachers try their hardest to get the students back on track and it's like the students still remain to be lazy and to start slacking even when they're getting pressured to do better. Some students think that they can get away with anything for example, if I have a bad grade I'll think the teacher will help me improve. Thats where they went wrong because in college it's nothing compared to that. I think students should take high school seriously as if it was college. As well as teachers treating them as college students.
